We would like to invite you to the third Asia-Pacific Mercury Monitoring Network (APMMN) workshop and meeting of the APMMN Science Advisory Group. In light of the Minamata Convention on Mercury, international cooperation on mercury monitoring has become a priority. Monitoring the trans-boundary transport and deposition of mercury is a challenge that no single country or agency can address on its own.

This three-day workshop, organized by the Vietnam Environment Administration, the Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Atmospheric Deposition Program, and the National Central University, Taiwan, will further advance development of the Asia-Pacific Mercury Monitoring Network and facilitate cooperation among key monitoring stakeholders in the region. Building on our progress over the last three years, the main objectives of the workshop are to:

1. Share information on mercury monitoring plans for the region, with updates from partners on their progress;

2. Further develop plans for the Asia-Pacific Mercury Monitoring Network pilot; finalize modifications to the APMMN standard operating procedures; decide on a wet deposition sampling start date; and

3. Provide training and demonstration of mercury wet deposition sampling operations and manual methods for atmospheric mercury sampling, including review of SOPs and best practices.

- Old Quarter: Hanoi’s lively Old Quarter comprises nearly 40 streets packed with shops selling all kinds of goods, each street named for its primary good or service.

- Ngoc Son Temple: or Temple of the Jade Mound, is located on a small islet at Hoan Kiem Lake. The temple was founded in the 14th century but most of its current structures were built in the 18th century. Ngoc Son Temple was built to commemorate a few Chinese and Vietnamese legends, including famous Vietnamese General Trần Hưng Đạo who twice led the Vietnamese troops to fence off the mighty Yuan Dynasty in the 13th century.

- Temple of Literature & National University:The Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu, 文廟) is a temple of Confucius in Hanoi, northern Vietnam. The temple hosts the "Imperial Academy" (Quốc Tử Giám, 國子監), Vietnam's first national university. The temple was built in 1070 at the time of King Lý Nhân Tông. It is one of several temples in Vietnam which are dedicated to Confucius, sages and scholars. The various pavilions, halls, statues and stelae of doctors are places where offering ceremonies, study sessions and the strict exams of the Dai Viet took place.

- Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum: Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is the historic place where Respected Uncle Ho read the Vietnam Manifesto on September 2nd, 1945. You may have to wait in a rather long queue to enter the mausoleum. The Mausoleum is closed on Monday and Friday but open the rest of the week.  It is also closed to visitors during October and November, allowing only pilgrims to visit to pay their homage to Respected Uncle Ho. The dress code for entry is very strict.  You must wear shirts and long trousers, no shorts. Also, no cameras, hats or bags are allowed.

Visitors must keep silent and you will only have a minute to stop in front of the glass enclosure where Uncle Ho lays. He is dressed in his traditional khaki clothes and rubber sandals, and looks as if he is just taking nap.

- One Pillar Pagoda:The characteristic central pillar of this small pagoda is said to represent the stem of a lotus flower, symbolizing purity.
